University of York

From the train station in the city centre (1 hour north of Sheffield), the University of York campus is a short bus ride away in the suburb of Heslington. Pretty much the whole university is based around the lake, which, along with the wildfowl, is the most memorable feature of the campus.

York is fairly new in the history of universities, but has built itself a formidable academic reputation renowned worldwide. Everything one might need can be found on campus, from accommodation and sports facilities to restaurants and even a large supermarket, meaning most needs a student may have are catered for. Perhaps the best selling point of the university is its arts centre, with its theatre spaces, cinemas and bars, though the new student union runs it close as a vibrant place to hang out. The student population are very active, and make the campus seem almost like a small town.

The Students’ Union has recently extended itself to become more prevalent within York university life, with a new bar and social space in the heart of the campus.

Famous York alumni include comedian Harry Enfield, former head of the BBC Greg Dyke, author Graham Swift, and MP Harriet Harman.
